The next morning, as he studied his face in the mirror, Duncan noticed not just the usual sag of his skin but a swelling on his lower lip. Difficult to hide without makeup, but what could he say, “I bit myself while diving for cover?” With no easy answer, he vowed to avoid the press. At least on Sunday he had no official duties.

He dragged himself to his dining table where a stack of mail awaited, forwarded from Springfield, including another typed envelope with no return address. Startled, the governor ripped it open as a child would his only Christmas present. The note read:
